Kenya lies astride the equator on the eastern coast of Africa. It is a medium-sized country by continental standards; covering an area of about 586,600km sq. Inland water bodies cover some 10,700km sq, the bulk of this in Lakes Victoria and Turkana. Kenya’s population stands at 38.6 million according to the 2009 national population census. The population is diverse with more than 40 ethnic groups. Kenya has numerous wildlife resource containing thousands of animal species. It has considerable land area of wildlife habitat, including the Maasai Mara, where Blue Wild beast and other Bovid participate in a large scale annual Wildebeest migration. Up to 250,000 blue wild beast perish each year in the long and arduous movement to find forage in the dry season. The Big five animals of Africa can be found in Kenya: the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and the elephant. Giant crocodile fossils have been discovered in Kenya, dating from the Mesozoic Era, over 200 million years ago. The fossils were found in July–August 2004 at Lokitaung Gorge, near Lake Turkana.
